8 Ways to Help Your Doctor Help Your Migraines and More Tips!
by J. Wes Tanner, MD
1) Have questions written down and give your doctor a copy. Allow your doctor to use judgment in what points and what order to cover them. Do not be disappointed if every question is not answered. Some of the questions may be interrelated, or the answer may not be known at the time.
2) Be precise in your questions.
3) Do not tell long stories. Be concise because you are limiting the teaching time.
4) Keep a diary of your medical events for at least one month. See http://www.migrainesyndrome.net/diary.pdf and http://www.migrainesyndrome.net/eventsheet.pdf
5) Be prepared to write down notes on what the doctor says, or at least, as soon as the doctor leaves the room.
6) Benefits from preventative medicines can take one to four months. Continue to keep your diary.
7) Track your improvement, or lack of improvement, with the HIT-6, http://www.headachetest.com, and/or MIDAS, http://www.zomig.info/gUserFiles/Midasquestionnaire5.pdf, questionnaires.
8) You will impress you doctor when you bring in your event sheet of your diary and the HIT-6 and/or MIDAS on your follow-up visits. To be a knowledgeable student and eager to learn, you will definitely encourage your doctor to take time to teach you what you need to know in order to feel better.
