Lifestyle Tips for Managing Arthritis Pain
One out of three adults in the U.S. suffers from arthritis or chronic joint problems, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

Some may get twinges upon awakening; others are so seriously and chronically debilitated that simply driving or washing the dishes causes agony.

Either way, arthritis is a major health problem. Whether you want to prevent contracting the disease or decrease the symptoms if you already have it, here are some steps you can take toward relief:

* Exercise. Regular physical activity strengthens the muscles that support arthritic joints, increases range of motion in the joints and, by reducing body weight, lessens the load the joints must bear.

* Find a hobby. The Arthritis Foundation reports that hobbies can have a positive effect on pain management by diverting the mind's attention away from physical and psychological pain. In a 2005 study, doctors found that older people with arthritis who listened to music for 20 minutes daily had less pain than those who simply sat and did nothing for the same length of time.

* Try supplements. You don't need a doctor's prescription to try a variety of supplements. For example, a product called Arthritis, part of the "Spray" line of sublingual sprays, was developed to relieve the inflammation of swollen, tender joints and the pain in stiff joints, hands and wrists. Its natural ingredients help improve flexibility and reduce discomfort, according to the manufacturer.

* Get more sleep. Inadequate sleep leads to an increase in arthritis pain and to a gain in weight, which stresses the joints even more.

* Eat well. Certain foods may help prevent arthritis or help reduce its symptoms. Specifically, the following could make a difference: omega-3 fatty acids (found in cold-water fish, walnuts and soybean kernels); selenium, an antioxidant in shellfish and whole-grain products; vitamin D (sources include eggs, fortified breads, cereals and milk); and vitamin C (berries and citrus fruits).
