It can strike you while you're walking-a distinct pain or cramping in your calf. You stop for a few moments and the pain goes away. You continue on and the pain comes back. You chalk it up to arthritis or getting older, but medical experts agree that it needs to get checked out. It could be Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a serious condition that afflicts 14-18 million Americans.
Similar to blocked blood vessels in the heart or brain that lead to heart disease or a stroke, blockages that occur in the legs, from atherosclerotic plaque left untreated, can be deadly.
